HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – A mother duck and her entourage of ducklings were crossing a Hackettstown street when five of them fell into a storm drain Tuesday morning.
Police were called to a Water St storm drain at 7:00 a.m. for a report of ducklings trapped inside, police said.
When the officers arrived, they located five ducklings in a storm drain and the mother duck standing nearby, police said.
It was determined that the ducklings were crossing Water St and as they walked over the storm grate, five ducklings fell into the drain, police said.
The police department was able to rescue four of the ducklings but one duckling ran through the storm drain pipe, police said.
Water from the town’s street sweeper and a resident’s garden hose were used to safely flush out the other duckling. A net was then used to get the duck out of the hole, police said.
When the ducklings were rescued, they were reunited with their mother. The ducklings all appeared to be unharmed, police said.
The Hackettstown Department of Public Works assisted in the rescue.
