JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A 35-year-old man was shot by a New Jersey State Trooper at his Jefferson Township home on Sunday night.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, a woman walking along the shoulder of Interstate 80 told troopers who came to her aid that her boyfriend assaulted her while driving and kicked her out of the car.
At about 11:30 p.m., troopers went to Matthew Gerndt’s home on Brady Road to arrest him for the alleged assault. After identifying themselves, troopers said Gerndt went into the house and locked the patio doors behind him, the Attorney General’s Office said.
Troopers entered and attempted to arrest Gerndt in a hallway, when he “charged aggressively” at a trooper who then fired twice, striking Gerndt once in his lower body, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
No troopers were injured.
Gerndt was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment of a non-life threatening injury, authorities said.
Gerndt was charged with assault and resisting arrest. He will be detained on the domestic violence assault charge when he’s released from the hospital, the Attorney General’s Office said.
“On May 28, 2017 at approximately 11:34 pm, PO Hecht, Jefferson Twp. Police Department, responded to a report of a State Police Officer involved shooting for a request for medical transportation. No Jefferson Township Police Officers were involved in the original event,” Jefferson Township Police Detective Joseph Kratzel said.
