SUSSEX BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – A Sussex County man wins a million dollars playing Mega Millions, the New Jersey Lottery announced Monday.
Allan Stormes focuses his Lottery play on the big Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots. When he buys a ticket, he keeps it simple. One line, Quick Pick, $1. He plays just enough to be in the game. He doesn’t even go out of his way to buy the ticket, instead using the change from his morning coffee purchase.
On January 20, Stormes stopped into the Catch 23 Deli at 40 C Hamburg Avenue in Sussex to grab a coffee. He used the extra $1 from the purchase to get in on the Mega Millions drawing that evening.
The next day, Stormes brought his wife a coffee while she stayed in bed. He handed her the winning ticket and said he won the lottery. His wife grabbed her glasses and checked the ticket, unable to believe him. Mrs. Stormes, knowing her husband is always looking for the next joke, called her sister to check and see if it could be real.
After confirming their win, she asked him for a kiss to celebrate their $1,000,000 win. Stormes replied mockingly, “You only want to kiss me because I’m rich!”
The couple took a few months to do some financial planning before claiming their prize. When asked what the outcome was, Stormes mentioned that he is a mechanic and will proudly keep his car, with over 200,000 miles, running like new. Mrs. Stormes, on the other hand, thought she might trade-in her car for a slightly newer model.
