The importance of athletic mouth guards

The start of school in the fall also means lots of student athletes on the field or court to compete. Dr. Gary Vander Vliet stopped by the RNJ Morning Program to chat with Morning Mike about the importance of mouth guards for athletics. A properly fitted mouthguard is a key piece of athletic gear. Mouth guards cushion impact that may otherwise cause chipped, broken, or lost teeth, jaw injuries, cuts to the lips and tongue, and even concussions. Athletes who do not wear mouth guards are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth. There are several types of mouth guards available, but Dr. Gary recommends a custom mouth guard, made by your dentist; these offer the best fit and protection against injury.
