MANSFIELD TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – Mansfield Twp. police department disbands K9 unit after their K9 officer resigns.
“The Mansfield Township Police Department is sad to announce the disbandment of our K9 Unit due to the unanticipated resignation of K9 handler Greg Zytko,” police said.
The township started raising money for Jax, a Dutch shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix, in December 2015 and they graduated the K9 academy on May 4, 2016.
“With the assistance of the Township Committee it was decided the best option, in looking out for our community and Jax’s well being, was to allow the handler’s new department to purchase Jax,” police said.
Zytko and Jax were hired by the Flemington Borough Police Department, located in Hunterdon County, this week.
“Although it is extremely difficult for us to see Jax go we believe the bond he has with his handler is too great and would cause Jax too much distress,” police said.
“We were able to recoup the costs of the unit and those funds will be placed back into the K9 Trust Fund to be earmarked for a future K9 Unit. We can’t thank our community enough for their support over the past two years and we look forward to starting a new unit in the future,” police said.
