UPDATE: Fire at Hunterdon Central regional high school ruled accidental

FLEMINGTON, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Fire crews responded to a report of a fire at Hunterdon Central Regional High School Thursday night.

At 8:55 p.m.a fire alarm activation occurred at Hunterdon Central High School, located on Route 31 North, in Flemington,  Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III, Chief of Detectives John J. Kuczynski, and Raritan Township Police Chief Glenn Tabasko said in a news release Friday.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke and flames coming from a storage room in the school. Multiple fire companies, including Flemington Fire Department, Raritan Township Fire Department, Lebanon Borough Volunteer Fire Company, and the Readington Volunteer Fire Company, responded to the scene and quickly got the fire under control and extinguished, Kearns said.

Damage to the interior of the building was minimal, however, the electrical power was disconnected to the building as part of the investigation, Kearns said.

The fire investigation was under the direction and supervision of the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Arson Task Force, Raritan Township Police Department and Raritan Township Fire Marshal Dennis Concannon, Kearns said.

Additional investigative support on the origin and cause of the fire was conducted with investigators from the Flemington Borough Police Department, and the Hunterdon County Fire Coordinator, Kearns said.

Hunterdon Central High School officials were on scene and were kept informed of the incident, Kearns said.

The investigative team concluded that there were no signs of foul play or anything suspicious at the area of origin. The cause of the fire appeared to be accidental in nature however no specific cause has been identified at this time, Kearns said.

There were no reported injuries to fire personnel or anyone at the school, Kearns said.

School officials announced that Hunterdon Central Regional High School will be closed Friday.
