READINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – Four people escaped injury after a New Jersey man’s GPS lead him onto railroad tracks and his car was then hit by an oncoming train Sunday evening.
At 6:21 p.m., township officers responded to the intersection of Stanton Station Road and Lilac Drive for a report of a motor vehicle struck by a train, police said.
When officers arrived, they discovered that a 2016 VW GTI driven by Carl E. Ailara, of Frenchtown, NJ had become stuck on the tracks, police said.
Ailara allegedly told police he mistook the tracks for Lilac Drive while following his vehicles GPS unit, police said.
After becoming stuck, Ailara and a passenger exited the car uninjured, police said.
A Norfolk Southern train then passed through the intersection and struck the VW causing major damage to the vehicle, police said.
Two railroad employees on the train were not injured, police said.
