INDEPENDENCE, NJ (Warren County) – A chorus of Christmas carols rang out at the Independence Township Volunteer Fire Department, as tons of toys and nonperishable food items were collected for families in need.

Independence Twp. Mayor, Bob Giordano, congratulated members of the community for lending a helping hand. “It’s just wonderful because my heart goes out to a lot of these kids, who don’t have a Christmas the way we do. It’s nice to give rather than receive,” said Giordano, as he stood before multiple mountains of brand new toys.

Tuesday night’s Toy and Food Drive marked the fifth year Independence Volunteer Fire Department hosted the event. “This is something Chief Riley used to do every year. We raised awareness for families in town who need our assistance,” says Independence Chief of Police, Keith Aiello.

The event also featured a Christmas tree lighting, and a holiday performance by “Dance Expression.” 15-year-old performer, Sara Arcona, said she was happy to participate in a show for such an important cause. “I hope we donate a lot for them,” said the young artist.

“There are so many donations, so many toys, so many food items we are all so excited for the community and proud of the turnout tonight. It definitely shows what Independence can do,” says member of the Independence Twp. Fire Department, Amanda Biamonte.

A drop box has also been placed at the Independence Municipal Building, 286B Route 46, Great Meadows to collect further donations. Members of the public can also call the municipal building: 908-637-4133 ext. 1012.
