SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – A Browns Mills resident receives fines and a two year license suspension in Frankfort Joint Municipal Court in connection with illegal bear hunting in Stokes State Forest during segment A, which was held in October, of the black bear season, according to the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife.
Acting on information from Conservation Police Officer Bryan Mascio, Adam Merritt and Lt. Steve Sutton located the hunter a short distance from his vehicle in a tree stand, authorities said.
The hunter, who did not have the proper Black Bear Hunting Permit for management zone 1, was not wearing the required fluorescent hunter’s orange and was found to be using a single shot 12-gauge shotgun loaded with a rifled slug, rather than a muzzleloader rifle as allowed for the segment.
The officers also found a pile of doughnuts and muffins within 300 feet of the tree stand, a violation of the baiting law.
Assistance was provided by NJ State Parks Police Officers Robert Sikora, Sgt. Melissa Brown and her K9 partner Dickson.
The name of the hunter was not released.
