Ready for Flu Season?

On a Tuesday edition of the Morning Program, Health Educator Samantha Bunsa from the Mount Olive Health Department shared information with Morning Mike about preparing for the flu season. Influenza is a serious disease of the nose, throat and lungs, that can lead to serious complications like pneumonia. Samantha noted that people often use the word “flu” to refer to any kind of cold-type illness. But influenza is a virus, not a bacteria, so antibiotic prescriptions will not help you get over it. She noted that one hallmark of flu symptoms is the sudden onset of fever and chills, muscle and body aches, sore throat and a stuffy (but not runny) nose, headaches, and fatigue. Vomiting and diarrhea most commonly occur in children.

Samantha encouraged everyone to get a flu shot. Other preventative tips include washing your hands often, covering your cough or sneeze, to avoid touching your face, and – most importantly – if you feel sick, stay home.
