CLINTON, NJ (Hunterdon County) – A Newark man driving a stolen car led police on a chase Wednesday afternoon in Clinton.
Freddy Rosario, 31, was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, obstruction of the administration of law, resisting arrest, driving while intoxicated and multiple other motor vehicle offenses.
At 3:45 p.m., Officer Anthony Robbins was on patrol in the area of the A&P on Old Highway 22/Route 173 when he observed a silver BMW SUV travelling at 67MPH and operating erratically eastbound from Leigh Street, police said.
Officer Robbins attempted to stop the vehicle however Rosario ignored the police lights and sirens and continued toward Center Street, police said.
As the vehicle approached the Center Street traffic light intersection, it crossed over into the westbound lane of Old Highway/Route 173, travelled through the intersection the wrong way and crashed into the curb, street signage and a grassy area at the corner of Center Street and Route 173 near the Route 31 overpass. Rosario then exited the vehicle and ran from the officer, police said.
Officer Robbins engaged in a foot chase with Rosario and was joined by an off-duty North Plainfield Sergeant Dennis Kardos who was in the area. He was finally caught and apprehended, police said.
Police were then notified that the BMW had just been stolen from the Krauser’s Convenience Store where it had been left running and unlocked in front of the store, police said.
Roasario was turned over to the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office pending his first court appearance, police said.
Chief Matheis stated “I commend off-duty North Plainfield Sergeant Dennis Kardos for his alert actions by assisting Patrolman Robbins in bringing this this incident to a swift conclusion without any injury to the public or the suspect.”
