SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – An alleged drunk driver flipped his car into the woods Thursday evening in Sparta Township.

At around 5:46 p.m., police responded to Sparta Avenue in the area of Surrey Lane for a report of an overturned vehicle in the woods with entrapment, Sparta Township Police Lieutenant John T. Lamon said.

When police arrived on scene, they located the driver, Richard Bernstein, 52, of Newton, NJ, who had already climbed out of the window of his white Toyota SUV, Lamon said.

Bernstein stated to police that he was not injured and did not want medical assistance, Lamon said.

While police were speaking to Bernstein, the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his mouth. Bernstein performed some field sobriety tests and at the conclusion of the testing he was placed him under arrest for driving while intoxicated, Lamon said.

Bernstein was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving and failure to keep right. He was advised of a mandatory court appearance and released to a sober adult.
