SPARTA TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) – A township woman is facing theft charges after police say she allegedly stole money from two businesses at which she was employed and solicited for a cancer fundraiser.
On Tuesday, October 18 Sparta Police responded to Anthony Franco’s Pizza for the report of an employee stealing tip money, Sgt Dennis Proctor said.
Patrols spoke to the owner of the business and viewed camera footage of an employee, Nicole L. Travers, 29 from Sparta, taking the tip box containing approximately $500.00 and leaving the establishment, Proctor said.
The business owner also reported proceeds in the register were short every evening Travers worked. A follow-up investigation determined the proceeds to be short approximately $900.00, Proctor said.
A warrant was issued for Travers for third degree theft of movable property and on October 21 she was located in Morristown and arrested. Travers was unable to post the $5,000.00 bail with no ten percent option and was lodged in the Sussex County Jail pending a court date, Proctor said.
On Sunday, October 30 at 11:33 a.m., Sparta Police were dispatched to Augie’s Brooklyn Bagels & Deli on Sparta Avenue for the report of an employee stealing from the cash register, Proctor said.
When police met with the owner, it was learned that a new employee, Nicole L. Travers had stolen $51.00 from the cash register. When confronted by the owner, she returned the money, Proctor said.
Patrols located Ms. Travers was located in a business several buildings away and admitted to the theft and was placed under arrest. Travers was charged with theft by unlawful taking-moveable property and was released pending a court date, Proctor said.
On Monday, October 30 at 4:45 p.m., Sparta Patrols were dispatched to Westgate Drive for the report of a suspicious female soliciting donations from several residents, Proctor said.
Police observed a female fitting the description of the individual soliciting the donations on the corner of Westgate Drive and Partridge Lane. The officer immediately realized the individual was Nicole L. Travers, Proctor said.
Travers had a warrant out for her arrest for forgery and theft by deception for soliciting another resident for a cancer fundraiser several days ago and then altering the check that the resident donated to her to a higher amount, Proctor said.
Travers was charged for theft by deception for the current solicitations and was then transported to the Sussex County Jail on the previous warrant. Her bail was set at $10,000.00 with no ten percent option and she has a court date pending, Proctor said.
