TRENTON – New Jersey’s great outdoor locales and activities will be featured Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10 during the Department of Environmental Protection’s eighth annual WILD Outdoor Expo at the Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area in Jackson Township, Commissioner Bob Martin announced today.

“This annual celebration of New Jersey’s outdoor attractions and activities has become one of the Department’s most popular events,” said Commissioner Martin. “It provides individuals and families with a chance to connect with our state’s nature by providing a unique blend of conservation information, education and hands-on opportunities to learn outdoor skills and activities.”

The Expo will highlight the state’s natural resources and outdoor heritage with more than 100 environmental and conservation exhibits, demonstrations and seminars. The rain-or-shine event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Admission and parking at the Expo are free as are most activities.

One of the Expo’s highlights will be a giant mobile aquarium, which will show off a variety of New Jersey’s fish species. The tank will be loaded with warm water game fish from the state’s fish hatchery located in Hackettstown. Casting and fishing demonstrations as well as instructional tutorials for new anglers are planned.

Expo visitors can also sharpen their camping and backpacking skills, get an introduction to archery, learn about osprey platform building, hone their bird and tree identification skills, walk through a mobile reptile zoo, and view raptors up close.  Other activities will include zip lining, stand up paddle boarding, nature photography, and outdoor learning on everything from fishing to kayaking, rock climbing, shooting sports and watching wildlife.

“The Expo provides a great opportunity for people of all ages to acquire new outdoor skills, while also learning about New Jersey’s bountiful natural resources” said Larry Herrighty, Director of the DEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife. “It is truly a one-stop event for learning how to explore, experience and enjoy New Jersey’s great outdoors.”

The numerous exhibits, demonstrations and seminars scheduled during the Expo will focus on New Jersey’s air, water, soil, flora, fauna and history. Experts will be on hand to discuss topics ranging from hunting to bird watching to scuba diving and forestry stewardship in the state. There also will be a living history encampment and demonstrations of crafting dating back to the 1740s.

Many of the free activities and programs offered at the Expo can help fulfill Boy Scout and Girl Scout badge requirements. View a complete list of free scout badge activities as well as a complete list of Expo events at www.wildoutdoorexpo.com

The Expo will also feature an equipment flea market featuring outdoor recreation and other environmental-related products for purchase. Food will be available from a variety of food  trucks and food vendors.

The WILD Expo is sponsored by the Division of Fish and Wildlife, State Forest Service, State Forest Fire Service and the State Parks Service, as well as the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey and L.L. Bean. It is partly financed by a grant from the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation’s Trailblazer Adventure Program.

MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – Thursday marks the 33rd anniversary of the disappearance of Edward DuBarry, then in his mid-thirties, from Montville Township.

Notwithstanding the passage of time, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Montville Township Police Department and the DuBarry family are seeking help in finding Edward DuBarry, who was reported missing on September 7, 1984.

DuBarry, a lifelong Montville resident, was last seen that day in the area of Church Lane and Two Bridges Road in the Towaco section of the township. At the time, he was driving a 1974, white Chevrolet pick-up truck. The truck was discovered a week later, on September 14, at Resort Point on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap.

DuBarry has a scar on his chin, right elbow and numerous scars on his fingers. He also has upper dentures and a previously fractured wrist.

The investigation has revealed that DuBarry’s credit card was used to pay for a room at the Howard Johnson Hotel at 551, Route 211 East, in Middletown, N.Y. on the evening of September 7. His credit card was also used two other times on September 7 – at the Columbia Truck Stop at 2 Simpson Road in Columbia and at Bartco Penn Petroleum, 10 Stella Street in Matamoras, Pa. Additionally, the credit card was used four days later, on September 11, at the Pompton Plains Shell in Pompton Plains.

Over the last 33 years, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Montville Township Police Department have remained committed to finding DuBarry. During the course of the investigation, the prosecutor’s office and the police department have worked with numerous law enforcement agencies, including the New Jersey State Police Missing Persons Unit, the National Park Service, the Pequannock Police Department and the Middletown, N.Y. Police Department.

The public is asked to assist the DuBarry family, which continues to work tirelessly with law enforcement to locate Edward.

Anyone with information regarding the possible whereabouts of Edward DuBarry is asked to contact the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Tip Line at (973) 285-6355 or email to mcpotips@co.morris.nj.us.

MANSFIELD TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – Three people were charged following a loud party complaint at Alexandria Apartments Friday evening.

More West Nile Virus found in Warren County mosquitoes

$

WARREN COUNTY, NJ – West Nile Virus has now been found in thirteen Warren County towns this summer, according to county officials.

The most recent mosquito samples that were collected on August 29 in traps from Riverfront Park off of Willow Grove St in Hackettstown and samples collected from East Baldwin St in Hackettstown tested positive for the disease, according to the Warren County Mosquito commission.

The August samples were tested on September 5 at the New Jersey Public Health and Environmental Lab in Trenton.

The traps used are specifically designed to catch Culex mosquitoes, which are the type responsible for transmitting West Nile virus, particularly from bird to bird.

Treatments in Hackettstown are scheduled on Monday September 11 and may be scheduled again if needed, county officials said.

July and August are typical for Warren County to see West Nile virus activity in mosquitoes.

So far this year, a total of 21 samples of mosquitoes have tested positive in Warren County – Alpha (1), Franklin(1), Greenwich (2), Hackettstown (5), Harmony (1), Hope (1), Lopatcong (1), Mansfield (1), Oxford (3), Phillipsburg (1), Pohatcong (1), Washington township (1), and White Township (2).

Mid to late August is peak time for humans and other mammals to acquire this virus.  No people in New Jersey have tested positive for West Nile Virus yet this year.  Subsequent trapping for adult mosquitoes is taking place to survey for mosquito species more likely to bite people.

Residents are urged to help reduce their risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases by following these guidelines:

  • Don’t produce mosquitoes on your property. Dump or drain standing water. Mosquitoes can’t begin their life without water.
  • Defend yourself against mosquitoes using repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
  • Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are present, typically Dawn and Dusk.
  • Report neglected swimming pools by calling 908-453-3585 or visiting warrencountymosquito.org. Anonymous calls accepted. Just one neglected pool can produce more than 1 million mosquitoes and affect people up to five miles away.

West Nile virus symptoms of the mild form include fever, headache, tiredness, body aches, and swollen lymph glands. While the illness can be as short as a few days, even healthy people have reported being sick for several weeks.

Less than one percent of individuals (about 1 in 150 people) infected with West Nile virus will develop severe illness. The severe symptoms can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. These symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent. West Nile virus infection can be fatal.
