BLAIRSTOWN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – A 74-year-old Lake Hopatcong man has died after he fell off an ATV Saturday evening, Blairstown Township Captain Scott Johnsen said.

At 5:54 p.m., Det. Bisanzio and Officer Dillon responded to 107 State Highway 94 for a report of a male that fell off an ATV. The man was slightly breathing and had a pulse, Johnsen said.

When police arrived, they found Dominick Sarinelli in the woods, approximately thirty yards down a hill, laying on the ground face up and unresponsive, Johnsen said.

Emergency crews began to perform CPR on Sarinelli and was then transported to Newton Medical Center by Blairstown Ambulance Corp, Johnsen said.

A police investigation revealed, that Sarinelli and a friend were hunting and Sarinelli was on the back of the ATV, Johnsen said.

They were about to travel uphill, when they came across a large branch that was across the trail and the ATV would not have been able to make it over the branch. Sarinelli went to say something and then fell “heels over head” onto to the ground, Johnsen said.

Police didn’t release the cause of death.

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) -Two Dover men have been arrested and charged with crimes related to the death last week of Michael Millan, 56, of Rockaway Township whose body was found in a wooded area on East Blackwell Street in Rockaway Township, Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp and Rockaway Township Police Chief Martin McParland said.

Jeysi Joran Carnales-Cardona, known as “Joran,” 37, was charged Sunday with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, witness tampering, and hindering apprehension.

Francisco Gonzales-Domingues, 36, was charged Sunday with endangering an injured victim.

On September 6, at about 5:08 p.m., law enforcement received a 911 call regarding a deceased male discovered in an area adjacent to the Lakeland Bus Company on East Blackwell Street. The victim, later identified as Millan and was known to live in the wooded area, which is known to have a population of homeless individuals.

A subsequent post-mortem examination of the victim revealed multiple stab wounds to his chest area. It was also discovered that Millan had multiple injuries to his head area.

An investigation revealed that Millan was assaulted and stabbed to death on September 4, two days earlier. The investigation also revealed that Carnales-Cardona, an acquaintance of the victim, was responsible for the victim’s death.

It was also discovered that Carnales-Cardona was with multiple other males during this assault, including Gonzales-Domingues, who was aware that the victim had been assaulted and injured and made no effort to provide assistance to the victim, either personally or through a third-party, such as medical aid.

It is also alleged that in the days following the death of the victim, Carnales-Cardona tampered with a witness regarding information related to the victim’s death and allegeldy provided false information to law enforcement during the course of this investigation.

Both were lodged at the Morris County Correctional Facility pending a first appearance in court.

This investigation remains active and ongoing.  If anyone has any information about the individuals described in this press release, or the circumstances surrounding these crimes, they are strongly encouraged to contact the Rockaway Township Police Department at 973-625-4000, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office – Major Crimes Unit at 973-285-6200, or Morris County Crimestoppers at 973-COP-CALL (973-267-2255).

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – Police charged a Flanders woman they say allegedly had cocaine and marijuana during a traffic stop Thursday evening.

At 9:00 p.m., a township officer observed a driver, Megan Gorrell, 24, of Flanders, NJ, talking on her cell phone as she passed the officer’s patrol car, police said.

After the officer stopped the car and explained what he had observed, Gorrell stated that she was talking to a friend while driving, police said.

As the officer spoke with Gorrell, he detected the odor of burnt marijuana emanating from within the vehicle. When asked about the odor, she stated that she had smoked marijuana earlier at a friend’s house, police said.

A search of the vehicle revealed a small ziplock of suspected cocaine, a multi-colored marijuana pipe, a marijuana grinder and a small glass jar containing suspect marijuana, police said.

Gorrell was charged with cellphone use in moving vehicle, controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. She was advised of required court appearance and released without further incident.

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A 25-year-old Newton man was injured Monday afternoon when he was struck by a car while crossing at the intersection of Trinity Street, Water Street and Mill Street, Newton Lt. Robert Osborn said.

The pedestrian, identified as Donovan Daniels, complained of pain to his right leg and was transported to the Newton Medical Center by Lakeland Emergency Squad, Osborn said.

The incident occurred at 3:38 p.m., as Elisha Johnson, 30, of Newton was operating a 2005 Honda Civic and was turning right from Water Street onto Mill Street when she failed to observe Daniels to be present within the crosswalk before striking him, Osborn said.

Subsequent investigation revealed that Daniels had the ‘Walk’ signal and was crossing Mill Street in a northbound direction at the time of the incident, Osborn said.

Johnson was uninjured and was issued a summons for careless driving and failing to yield to a pedestrian within a crosswalk, Osborn said.

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – For years, children wishing to check out a book at Hackettstown High School went to the library.

Now, they peruse the collection at the Patricia Miller Media Center. It’s a 21st Century, State-of-the-Art Media Center to enhance student’s educational experience.

The new name honors the teacher who has devoted 49 years to educating students. The renaming was completed in style with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a sign unveiling Tuesday evening.

Miller is a long time Independence resident, an iconic Biology teacher at our high school and former Great Meadows Board of Education member and Board President.

“My students as a teacher, they made me so happy. If I’m good it’s because the students I’ve had,” Miller said.

Miller taught at Hackettstown High School from 1968 through 2017.

She touched and influenced so many generations of students from Hackettstown, Independence, Liberty and Allamuchy Townships that her mark will forever be left on the school.

“Hackettstown has produced wonderful people and I’m lucky enough to have them,” Miller said.

“You’ll be with us forever,”  Superintendent of Schools Great Meadows Regional and Hackettstown Public Schools David C. Mango said.

Hope Chamber to host Grow Warren presentation

HOPE TWP. (Sept. 5, 2017) –  Anyone interested in the future of agriculture in Warren County is urged to attend a very important meeting being hosted by the Hope Area Chamber of Commerce on Thursday Sept. 28 starting at 6:30 p.m. This free event will be held at the Inn at Millrace Pond, Route 519, in historic Hope, and is open to all.

Grow Warren is an initiative by the County of Warren to support its small and emerging farmers. With funding from the USDA’s Rural Business Development program, Warren County has retained the services of Greener by Design, LLC to help create a strategic growth and marketing plan.

The group’s project team will examine the area’s agricultural industry, conduct a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis, and recommend measures that the County and its partners can take in order to help local farms grow, attract new agricultural entities, and generally meet the demands of the future.

Frank Pinto and Ben Spinelli, Principals of the firm Greener by Design, will give an overview presentation of the Grow Warren project and what its goals are, including assessing the agriculture industry in Warren as a whole, identifying trends in the county, potential areas of growth, developing a “Grow Warren” brand, and other related issues to the betterment of the agriculture industry here.

The meeting was initiated by Terry Urfer, member of the chamber’s executive board and a member of the county agriculture board.  It is open to farmers, government officials, residents and anyone else who is a proponent of the agriculture industry in Warren County.

“This is a very important initiative that the county has undertaken,” said Urfer. “Hope is in the center of the farming industry in Warren County and we felt that this would be a perfect place to host the event.”

Pinto notes that Warren County is an ideal geographic location for growth, is becoming an expanding market for brewing and wineries, and has the potential to be a growing market for area restaurants interested in serving locally sourced products and is well positioned to meet a demand for local produce in general.

“We are looking to get feedback from ‘consumers’ in Warren County and this meeting will help us,” said Pinto. “We are anxious to know their preferences and opinions about agriculture in Warren County and what they would recommend to enhance the agricultural economy of the County.”

Whether or not you can attend, Grow Warren asks that you complete the Grow Warren survey to help the County get your opinion on the agricultural economy of Warren County: https://growwarren.org/survey/.

“The survey results will enable us to see farmer and consumer preferences and opinions,” said Pinto. “That will help us formulate a strategy to enhance the agricultural economy of Warren County.”

Beer, cocktails, wine and food will be available for purchase. For more information about this meeting or to RSVP, please call Terry Urfer at 973-927-6595. For more about the chamber, visit www.hopeareachamber.com.
