Mansfield Twp. man called 911 for a ride home, police say

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – A Mansfield Township man who allegedly called 911 for a ride home was charged by police early Thursday morning.

Felix Guzman, 28, was charged with disorderly conduct, police said.

At 2:27 a.m., town police responded to Quick Chek, located at 146 Route 182, in reference to a male that dialed 911 because he needed a ride home, police said.

When officers arrived on scene, the officers located Guzman outside of the Quick Chek, police said.

The officers determined that Guzman allegedly consumed alcohol and dialed 911 because he just wanted a ride to Mansfield Village, police said.

Guzman was released pending a court appearanceand then given a ride to his residence

“We understand and empathize with the people who will comment and say well, at least he didn’t drive drunk. Absolutely, we are happy he didn’t get behind the wheel and get in an accident and hurt somebody or himself, but that’s not the issue here. The main issue here is tying up the 911 line for a gratuitous ride home,” police said.

We want the public to know that 911 is for emergencies — and that’s it, police said.

If you’re intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive you to your doorstep, police said.

The importance of athletic mouth guards

The start of school in the fall also means lots of student athletes on the field or court to compete. Dr. Gary Vander Vliet stopped by the RNJ Morning Program to chat with Morning Mike about the importance of mouth guards for athletics. A properly fitted mouthguard is a key piece of athletic gear. Mouth guards cushion impact that may otherwise cause chipped, broken, or lost teeth, jaw injuries, cuts to the lips and tongue, and even concussions. Athletes who do not wear mouth guards are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth. There are several types of mouth guards available, but Dr. Gary recommends a custom mouth guard, made by your dentist; these offer the best fit and protection against injury. If you’d like to learn more, visit Dr. Gary Vander Vliet at thehightechdentist.com. Dr. Vander Vliet is at Advanced Dental Care of West Morris, Hastings commons, Bldg. 2B, 486 Schooley’s Mountain Rd., Hackettstown. Call 908-852-8858.

Morristown (Morris County , NJ)–The Morris County Board of Freeholders held a special ceremony last night to present a county resolution of congratulations to Ryan Houser of Morristown who has been named the national Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) of the Year.

Houser will receive his national award next month from the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) and EMS World at a conference in Las Vegas.

In honoring Houser, the freeholders were joined by Morris County Undersheriff Mark Spitzer, Morris Plains Mayor Frank Druetzler, Hanover Mayor Ron Francioli, Morris Plains Mayor Bruce Sisler, Morris County OEM Director Jeff Paul, among others, who also presented him with various awards on behalf of their communities or organizations.

“Even at his young age, Ryan has shown a long-time commitment to the community, providing an example of dedication and excellence to his younger peers and to veterans of the Emergency Services community,’’ said Freeholder Director Doug Cabana, in presenting him with a county resolution.

“I am proud that a fine young man such as Ryan continues to give back to the community.  As he is honored with the 2017 National EMT of the Year Award in October, our residents are blessed to have him ready to serve,” said Assemblyman Anthony M. Bucco, who along with state Sen. Anthony Bucco and Assemblyman Jay Webber had a resolution of the State Legislature presented to Houser.

Ryan Houser has worked in Emergency Medical Services, starting as a volunteer, since age 16. He is a full-time student at Rutgers University, with aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon, working in law enforcement and advancing the field of tactical medicine. However, that educational commitment has not slowed down his community involvement.

  • Volunteer EMT for the Morris Minute Men EMS, serving as Assistant Captain;
  • Certified as a firefighter, with the Morris Township Fire Department;
  • Instructor of terrorism response courses;
  • EMT for the Cedar Knolls Fire Department;
  • EMT for the Morris County Office of Emergency Management;
  • Serves on judiciary committees to support juveniles;
  • Works at Morristown Medical Center as an Emergency Technician.

He also is creating awareness videos to benefit community education and encourage agency volunteers.

“Ryan dedicates considerable time to his pursuit of providing exceptional patient care to individuals in the prehospital and hospital setting,” said colleague Kendall Sarson. “Ryan has truly modeled his entire life around helping others, whether patient or peer, and his work as an EMT has become one of the most significant parts of his identity.”

The NAEMT award recognizes an emergency medical technician who demonstrates excellence in the performance of emergency medical services, with their primary role being that of pre-hospital patient care.
