Warren County courthouse closes after threat

BELVIDERE, NJ (Warren County)The Warren Courthouse had closed Friday due to a threat against personnel.

At around 10:01 a.m., the Warren County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Phillipsburg Police Department that Nelson Martinez, 34, of Phillipsburg, NJ made a threat by telephone that he was going to kill a judge in 44 minutes, according to Warren County Sheriff James McDonald.

The Sheriff’s Office had known information that Martinez had made threats from Tuesday through Friday, McDonald said.

Tuesday a threat was made to his son’s mother, on Wednesday, threats were made to the Department of Child Protection and Permanency, on Thursday, threats were made to the DCPP, the Warren Count State Judiciary offices and the Phillipsburg Police Department, McDonald said.

On Friday, threats were made to the DCPP and the Warren County State Judiciary Offices. Martinez also had made several calls to the DCPP and the NJ State Probation Office, making threats to kill several people, then kill himself if his demands were not met, McDonald said.

The courthouse was immediately placed on a lockdown and numerous law enforcement agencies were contacted in ragards to the threat since no specific judge was named, McDonald said.

The Belvidere Police Department placed the Belvidere Schools in shelter mode due to the close proximity to the courthouse, McDonald said.

At around 12:35 p.m., Martinez was taken into custody in Easton, PA by a US Marshall Service Agent, McDonald said.
