SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – Eggo, a retired K9 formerly with the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, died earlier this week following a prolonged illness, Sussex County Sheriff Michael Strada announced Monday.
K9 Eggo joined the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office in 2008. He successfully completed the New Jersey State Police K-9 Basic Patrol Class #10 as well as the New Jersey State Police K-9 Explosives Scent Detection 21st Class. He was cross trained and certified as both a patrol canine and explosives detection canine.
K9 Eggo began his career originally assigned to be handled by Sheriff’s Officer Warren Slahor and was then assigned to Detective Lieutenant Mitch Ellicott.
Throughout his career, K9 Eggo responded to over 300 calls for service, assisting local and state police agencies in the location of wanted persons, burglary suspects, emotionally disturbed persons, missing juveniles, the recovery of discarded evidence from crime scenes, and the detection of explosive threats.
In October of 2017, both K9 Eggo and Detective Lieutenant Ellicott retired from the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office. From that time on, Eggo lived for the remainder of his life as the beloved pet of the Ellicott family.
Sheriff Strada offers his condolences to both retired Detective Lieutenant Ellicott and Corporal Slahor as well as their respective families, and shares the sympathy of the men and women of the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office as we all grieve the loss of K9 Eggo.
